Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to examine the responses of nonschizophrenic depressives and nondepressed schizophrenics to a measure of locus of control as a partial test of the learned helplessness model of depression.
Hypotheses were: 1) there is no significant differences in the way depressives and schizophrenics respond to the Rotter I-E scale, 2) depressives assess their locus of control to be as external as schizophrenics.
Subjects were 56 depressives and schizophrenics, inpatients and outpatients of Inje & Sun chun-hyang medical college hospitals, Ewha Woman¢¥s, Yonsei, & Hanyang, University Hospitals, and Chungryang-ree Mental Hospital.
Instruments used were Beck Depression Inventory and Rotter¢¥s Internal-External scales. No significant differences between I-E scores of depressives and schizophrenics, and externally oriented scores, were found.
